Guide to the English of the King James Version

How to understand unknown words in the KJV:

  1. Use the context to understand––figure out what the KJV word means from the sentence it is in, and from the surrounding passage
  2. Look up words in a dictionary––define the KJV words that you cannot understand
  3. Continue reading––most of the KJV vocabulary/style will become easier with familiarity

Different 2nd Person Pronouns

When speaking to one person, or as if to one person, the Bible will use pronouns beginning with “th”: thee, thou thy, thine. When speaking to more than one person, the Bible will use pronouns beginning with “y”: you, ye, your.

Stylized Words

John 3:7 “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” In the KJV English, certain words have different endings than usual to harmonize

Archaic Words

The KJV has many words which are not used in contemporary English:
