he LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel” (Psalm 147:2).
Thanks be to God, who has kept us and prospered the work of our hands in this ministry over yet another month. We feel very much like Paul, who did not consider himself worthy of the least of the mercies of his apostleship of the Gentiles, in that we are given day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year, the wings of eagles to soar in Christ’s service! God has never left us nor forsaken us, and for that we are perpetually contented.
Readers will recall that we have just moved to a new compound, primarily to provide sufficient space to accommodate this rapidly growing church. The construction project (renovating the exterior area of the compound to make it suitable for congregational use) is actually, at the time of writing (almost halfway through May), still not finished. It truly is a massive project that we dramatically underestimated. We are just about to finish the gargantuan congregational roof structure. Finishing touches and decorative designs will be in order, as well as the completion of an extra restroom facility in the back of the compound. Please pray that we will be able to successfully finish all the construction/decoration by the end of May. This property has various fruit-bearing trees (mangoes, avocadoes, guavas, and matoke), and we plan to plant various vegetable plants (tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc.), all which will be a blessing to partake of ourselves, and to freely distribute to the church members on a regular basis—if you come to visit, you can have some too! What a blessing this new property is, which will allow us to break forth on the right and left hand, having lengthened our cords and strengthened our stakes: “and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles” (Isaiah 54:2-3).
Because about half of our soul-winners (including us two, John and Jesse) have been much occupied in the construction project (in some way or another), it has taken quite a toll on the results of this month. In any case, God has blessed us in the month of April to see 559 people converted to faith in the true gospel. We had a Baptism Day on Easter (as discussed), and there had 39 baptisms of new believers. We also welcomed 48 new people to church/discipleship lessons this month for the first time, and had 5 new believers finish discipleship. Continue in prayer for God to grow this church, Bible Baptist Church, qualitatively and quantitatively, as we seek to be faithful to him.
“Understandest Thou What Thou Dost Not Read?” by Jesse
One of the most deplorable realities about Uganda is that it is a nation of people who do not read. It is not that they cannot read—an estimated 80% of the population is presumably literate. Rather, it is that reading is almost entirely neglected, partially out of cultural aversion (African culture is primarily oral, not written), but more substantially, out of sheer slothfulness. One day, as I went to buy a trove of Bibles for distribution to new disciples, and also to buy books for our forthcoming church library, this reality was again impressed upon me. In the various shops I went to, I asked those merchants who sell books for a living, “How many books have you read in your life?” The answer was always greeted with laughter and a shameful, “None.” As I waited for the Bibles I was purchasing to be prepared in a box, I preached the gospel to one Brandon, who spent his time in nothing else than worldly music and social media. He very readily received the truth, and I immediately told him, “Instead of wasting your time sitting here listening to Lucifer’s lyrics and perusing through vanity on your phone, why don’t you just take that KJV Bible right next to you off the shelf and begin reading as you wait for customers?” What a horrible thing, to die and go to hell surrounded by the true word of God, and yet having never even attempted to read it!
Things are never boring here, as we are always seeking to pioneer new works for the Lord which will cause the gospel’s influence to continually expand in Africa. At the time of writing, we have just returned from a short mission trip in Northern Uganda (for which cause we delayed a few days from usual in the production of this letter), our first-ever, and will be producing a full-length film (to be released on our YouTube channel), possibly by the end of May, about it. Therefore, we will refrain from any discussion of it now, and do encourage all readers to wait for that film to be put out. We hope it will inspire you about the mighty hand of God working in Africa.
May will be, we hope, for us a finalization and preparation month for June and July, where (among other things) we will have a soul-winning event concomitant with a big national holiday in Uganda, Uganda Martyr’s Day (Saturday, June 3rd), where we intend to go to the “heart of the Catholic beast” in Namugongo (located in the north-eastern sector of Kampala) and preach the gospel among the millions who will assemble there. Please be in prayer about that great “Day-of-Pentecost” opportunity.
A special thanks to the handful of generous saints who supply the financial need of this ministry, especially in this crucial time of growth and expansion. We have been frequently financially pressed out of measure of late, and find always the help of God’s people coming in Samuel-like perfect timing. May God supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
God be with you all.
